Why a Real Word Is Sometimes Rejected
First check the letters
Most rejections are rules, not taste. The word is under four letters. It never uses the center. It sneaks in a letter that is not among the seven.
Repeats are not the problem. Players talk themselves out of valid words because they think a letter can be used only once. It cannot run out.
Then check the house style
Puzzle editors publish for a wide audience. They tend to skip proper nouns, hyphenated compounds, and words that are archaic, crude, or trademark-like. A dictionary will still know those words. That gap is why a solver list and a game list are not copies of each other.
The daily hive’s habit of leaving S out also kills the easiest plurals. PEOPLE can still appear, because its plural shape does not need an S. CATS cannot, unless S is on the board.
What to do with a maybe
Run it through the checker. If the letters fail, forget it. If the letters pass and the game still refused it, treat it as an editorial cut and move on. Ask the coach for a plain explanation if you want the category, not a debate.
