Spelling Bee Rules — Center Letter, Length and Repeats

The rules are short. Seven letters. One required center. Words of four letters or more. Repeats allowed. Only those letters. Everything else is strategy or house style.

How to use spelling bee rules

  1. Put the required letter in the center.
  2. Build words of four or more letters from the seven.
  3. Repeat letters whenever the word needs it.

The letter rules

You may use the center as many times as you like, and you may use each outer letter as many times as you like. You may not introduce an eighth letter. The gold hex in HiveMate is that center letter.

The well-known daily puzzle uses a fresh set of seven letters each day and, so far, has never included S. That single choice removes most regular plurals. HiveMate does not force that limit. If your hive has an S, plurals can count.

Which words are in bounds

At least four letters. Not a proper noun. Not hyphenated. Puzzles also skip some words that are rude, trademark-like, or too obscure for a general audience. Those last cuts are editorial, so two dictionaries will not match perfectly.

HiveMate’s checker enforces the letter rules exactly, then looks the word up. The AI coach is there for the editorial grey area, described in ordinary language.

Pangrams are a scoring rule, not a spelling rule

You do not need a pangram for a word to count. A pangram is only a word that happens to use every letter. It scores a bonus. A hive can be finished, in theory, with no pangram at all, though good hives are built so at least one exists.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse letters?

Yes. There is no limit on repeats. That is why a word can be longer than seven letters.

Are two-letter words allowed?

No. The minimum length is four. Two-letter pairs on the hint page are prefixes, not answers.
