A Beginner’s First Hive: A Method You Can Reuse

Learn the board before the words

Say the center letter. Then say the other six. Notice how many vowels you have. Two vowels and a friendly consonant is a generous hive. One vowel and a jumble of hard consonants is a slow hive. Knowing that keeps you from blaming yourself.

A twenty-minute first session

Minutes one to five: every four-letter word you can see. Minutes five to ten: take each of those and try one extra letter. Minutes ten to fifteen: look only at words that start with the center. Minutes fifteen to twenty: decide whether you want a hint.

Stop while it is still fun. A first session that ends at Good is a success. Genius is a later goal.

What to ignore at the start

Ignore pangrams until you have a dozen words. Ignore rank math. Ignore anybody’s answer thread. The rules fit on an index card, and the vocabulary comes from noticing, not from reading.
